Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin

Did you know that vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, comes from the body's ability to interact with sunlight? Vitamin D is found in the foods we eat, but our bodies can also produce vitamin D when exposed to the sun.

Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, often occurs during the fall and winter months, and is associated with feelings of depression, fatigue and sleepiness. It is thought that a lack of sunlight from the cooler months and shorter days can create a deficiency of vitamin D and may be the cause of this disorder.

If you suspect you are affected by SAD, you will want to get outside as much as you can during the daytime hours and take advantage of the sunlight. Moving more and getting regular exercise through the day can also be helpful, as with any type of depression. You should also consult with your doctor, who may recommend a blood test to determine if your Vitamin D is too low.
