New Colorectal Cancer Screening Test
- Posted On:
A new screening test for colorectal cancer is now available at Campbell County Memorial Hospital for only $25. The High-Sensitivity Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) is a simple, take-home test. The collection kit contains complete instructions, is pre-labeled and includes an envelope for your results. Simply return the sample to the hospital for testing. Samples are tested the day they are received and the results are mailed directly back to you.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. If everyone aged 50 or older had regular screening tests, at least 60% of colorectal cancer deaths could be avoided. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends FOBT screening annually for men and women ages 50-75.
Colorectal cancer usually starts from polyps in the colon or rectum. A polyp is a growth that shouldn't be there. Over time, some polyps can become cancerous. Screening tests can identify polyps so they can be removed before they become cancerous. Screening tests can also find colorectal cancer in early stages, when the chance for recovery is good.
The FOBT is part of HealthCheck on demand testing, available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-11 am. Call the CCMH Laboratory at 688.1222 for more information about this and other HealthCheck blood screening services.
