CCH Opens Mother’s Milk Bank Donation Site

GILLETTE, WY – Campbell County Health (CCH) has partnered with Rocky Mountain Children's Health Foundation and Mother's Milk Bank to open a human milk donation site beginning Thursday, February 12, 2015. Mother's Milk Bank is a non-profit program benefitting mothers and babies nationwide by allowing mothers with extra breast milk to donate their excess milk and make a difference in the lives of infants in the region. CCH is the only donation site for Mother's Milk Bank in northeast Wyoming.

"The Denver-based organization gets regular inquiries from our area, "said Maternal Child Manager Josie LeMaster. "Mothers who produce more than enough milk to support their infant may want to provide the benefit of 'liquid gold' for other babies and mothers. This is a great opportunity for Campbell County Health to support other families."

According to the United States Surgeon General and the World Health Organization, breast milk is the first best choice to feed newborns and infants. Potential donors are screened even more carefully than blood donors, and undergo a detailed medical and lactation history screening by Milk Bank personnel to ensure they meet the donor requirements established by the Mother's Milk Bank Advisory Council and the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. They must be non-smokers, take no medications, and she and family must be well during the time she donates. Donor requirements restrict alcohol use and limit caffeine consumption and have the same blood tests done that are done for blood donors.

Interested donors can call Mother's Milk Bank directly at 877-458-5503, the Maternal Child department at Campbell County Health at 307-688-2200 or visit www.cchwyo.org/milkbank.
