Do You Know What to Expect at Your First Mammogram?

If you have never had a mammogram before, it can be an intimidating process. Knowing what to expect can relieve some of the anxiety you may experience.

The entire procedure should only last about 15 minutes. During the procedure, you will place your breast on a glass plate, and then it will be compressed by another plate from above. This allows for a clear view of the breast tissue. This part of the procedure should only last about 30 seconds; it is generally uncomfortable, but not painful and you will need to hold your breath and be still while the breast is compressed. Later your mammogram will be read by a Radiologist and the results will be passed onto your doctor.

Remember that breast self-exams area also important. A self-exam can detect up to 15% of issues, not seen on a mammogram.

Radiology is also offering extended hours for mammography appointments the month of October for breast cancer awareness month. Radiology recommends that women have annual screening mammograms to help reduce their risk of breast cancer. It's recommended that women have their first by age 40, but to consult with a physician about when to begin if there is a family history of breast cancer.
