CCH Makes Changes to Radiology Women's Imaging Area

For most women, getting a mammogram is an uncomfortable, awkward experience. But Campbell County Health is working to improve the experience for patients by implementing a few changes.

Since moving into its new location, Campbell County Health’s Radiology Department has a separate Women’s Imaging Area. The separate area allows for more privacy for women, and the Radiology Department is transforming not only the atmosphere, but the way approach to patients as well, working to make them more comfortable as patients undergo what can sometimes be uncomfortable procedures.

“We have a more relaxing, peaceful environment,” said Tia Knapp, clinical supervisor in the Radiology Department. “We were going for a more spa-like feel. Patients enjoy the tranquility of the area.”

Those environmental changes include bottled and citrus water in the waiting area, women-centric decor and Sirius radio with a separate playing selection from other areas of the hospital. The new imaging area also includes private, spacious changing rooms with lockers and full length mirrors. Because many women can be nervous about getting a mammogram or other procedure, Knapp said, the quiet atmosphere is aimed at decreasing anxiety.

“Women can be anxious,” Tia said. “We’re working really hard at putting what matters to the patient as our first priority.”

That was evident to Connie Anderson, who recently had a mammogram. Since she had several routine mammograms previously, Connie was presently surprised by the positive changes. Not only did the updated environment impress her, but so did the care she received from the technologist.

“She came out and sat down beside me and visited with me a little bit,” Connie said. “She was so personable. She was caring thoughtful and kind. She went above and beyond to make me feel super comfortable in a situation that’s uncomfortable for many women.”

Connie was also impressed by the heated robes and available warm cloths. The entire experience was so positive that Connie went back to work and encouraged one of her co-workers who had been putting off getting a mammogram for quite some time to get an appointment.

That kind of response is something that Tia said they’ve been receiving since moving into the new Women’s Imaging Area in June. Recently, she had a patient bring a friend along, just so she could see all of the changes that have taken place.

“We have gotten amazing feedback from people,” Tia said. “We tried to very thoughtfully define the space we were given for their comfort and convenience.”
