Meet Sandy Stryker-Jones, a valued volunteer with Campbell County Health in Gillette, Wyoming.
Sandy spent 34 years teaching elementary students in the Campbell County School District! She says she struggled in school herself, and it was very fulfilling to see the light bulb go on for her students.
She originally came to Gillette from Colorado because her college roommate was moving here to take a teaching job. At that time Gillette paid teachers the fourth highest salaries in the United States. Sandy convinced her husband Marc to move by saying that they would stay in Gillette for a year.
Sandy retired in 2012, and started volunteering the following year. She heard about volunteering at CCH from the other retired teachers on the volunteer roster. She was a regular volunteer in the Campbell County Memorial Hospital Gift Shoppe, and has branched out to The Legacy Living and Rehabilitation Center Country Store and the CCMH Information Desk. One of her favorite volunteer assignments has been with fellow volunteer Lisa Mayhlis at the Camp Med program, a day-long camp for 11-12 year olds to learn about healthcare. She says it could be what spurs a child on to a career in healthcare.
Sandy recently reached the 1,000 hours mark as a volunteer, and Volunteer Coordinator Chris Buxton says she depends on Sandy to fill in when she can.
“Sandy is dependable, willing to help when and wherever she’s needed and fun to have on board!” says Chris.
Sandy and her husband are traveling several months at a time now, but says she could never be a full-time RV-er. Sandy loves to play golf, quilt and spend time with her husband and children.
Sandy embodies the spirit of volunteerism; giving her time for the opportunity to help others. Thank you for giving so much of your time and talents to CCH.
