This week, November 3-9, Campbell County Health celebrates Radiologic Technologist Week!
For those who don’t know, registered radiologic technologists (RTs) are medical professionals who perform diagnostic imaging examinations and administer radiation therapy treatments.
RTs practice in hospitals, clinics and physician’s offices, and in many clinical specialties—from prenatal care to orthopedics. Campbell County Health (CCH) employs 29 RTs in the Radiology, Cardiac Cath Lab and Radiation Oncology departments. RTs at CCH perform more than 46,000 procedures a year!
RT’s practice general radiography, including X-ray, and specialize in various imaging techniques such as:
- bone densitometry (DEXA)
- cardiac or vascular interventional radiography (cardiac cath lab)
- computed tomography (CT)
- mammography (2D & 3D)
- magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- nuclear medicine (PET Scans)
- sonography (ultrasound)
Radiation therapists and medical dosimetrists are technologists who specialize in radiation therapy, which is the application of radiation to treat cancer and other diseases.
Educated in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety and patient care, registered radiologic technologists must earn an associate or more advanced degree from an accredited hospital-based program or academic institution, and pass a national certification examination. To remain registered, they must also earn 24 continuing education credits every two years. The largest certification agency, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists®, has more than 300,000 registrants. Wages of radiologic technologists are competitive with other health professionals who have similar educational backgrounds.
At Campbell County Health, there are two locations for most procedures: Campbell County Memorial Hospital Radiology Department, at 501 S. Burma Avenue, and the Outpatient Imaging Center located in the Stocktrail Building at 508 Stocktrail Avenue, both in Gillette, Wyoming.
A huge round of applause to our Radiologic Technologists for keeping our community healthy!
