Should I be tested for COVID-19?
- Posted On:
If you are feeling under the weather, you may wonder if you have COVID-19 and if you should get tested. The best thing you can do is talk to your doctor, or primary care provider about your symptoms and if you should be tested for COVID-19 or not.
Some questions a doctor may ask you to see if you should be tested for COVID-19 include:
- Have you been in close contact (within 6 feet) with someone who has COVID-19?
- Did a public health official tell you that you’ve come into contact with COVID-19?
- Have you traveled recently?
- Do you have a fever or cough?
- Do you have shortness of breath?
You can also check out the CDC’s Coronavirus Self-Checker to help you make decisions on COVID-19 testing, which can be found at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus.

Who should be tested for COVID-19
According to the CDC, there are considerations for those who should be tested; these include:
- Those with symptoms of COVID-19
- Those who have been in close contact with someone with confirmed COVID-19—within 6 feet for at least 15 minutes
- People who have been asked or referred to get tested by their doctor or a public health official.
Not everyone needs to be tested. There is no treatment for COVID-19; so if your symptoms are mild, your doctor will probably tell you to stay home and away from others.
If you do get tested, you should self-quarantine/isolate at home pending test results, and follow the advice of your health care provider or a public health professional.
Call 911 and seek emergency care immediately if you have trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion, inability to wake or stay awake, and/or bluish lips or face.
