Department Discovery – Maternal Child Services

The CCH Maternal Child Unit takes pride in making new beginnings a safe and memorable experience for new parents in our community by providing obstetric, newborn and infant care in our new patient rooms. Moms labor, deliver and recover in the same room, called an LDRP; a C-section (operating) room and Level 2 Special Care Nursery rooms are available if needed.

The new patient rooms are spacious and designed enough space for visitors, and for overnight stays by fathers or support persons.

Forty dedicated and experienced professionals provide care for patients on the Maternal Child Unit, including Labor and Delivery and Level 2 Special Care Nursery registered nurses, licensed practical nurses (LPNs), OB techs and a unit secretary. Pediatric hospitalists also care for newborns and babies in the Level 2 nursery. A hospitalist is a provider who sees patients only in the hospital, coordinating care with other specialists if needed.

So far this year Maternal Child Services has welcomed 248 babies to the community, with 34 births in June. July is predicted to be the biggest month for births so far this year, with 56 deliveries anticipated.

This year the unit is focused on implementing several Maternal Child quality care collaborative projects to help improve maternal and newborn health outcomes. This requires collecting and analyzing data and researching best practices at other healthcare facilities. The specific conditions for analysis include OB hemorrhage, cardiovascular disease in pregnancy and hypertension (high blood pressure) in pregnancy, all issues that can contribute to serious complications for moms and babies.

Another exciting project for Maternal Child Services is the implementation of a new NICU telehealth agreement with HealthONE, a large health system in Colorado. When the agreement is finalized, providers and parents will have a virtual platform to communicate with specialty providers in Denver when needed.

According to Maternal Child Director Jennifer Besner, “the best thing about working in Maternal Child is that it never feels like work. We love what we do and we take care of each other. We are all like family, and when someone is in need, we always see each other through.”

A big round of applause to the Maternal Child staff! Thank you for all that you do for keeping our moms and babies healthy. You can learn more about Maternal Child Services at https://www.cchwyo.org/services/womens-health-services/maternal-child/.
