What is the Difference Between a Skilled Nursing Facility and Assisted Living?

Welcome to Legacy Living! A skilled nursing facility (SNF) dedicated to teaching residents that it's okay to live again and keep on living! The Legacy Living and Rehabilitation Center offers both long-term care and short-term rehabilitation and is part of Campbell County Health Medical Group’s wide range of licensed care facilities.

So what exactly is a skilled nursing facility and how is it different from assisted living?

Skilled nursing communities provide 24/7 around the clock nursing care to those who require specialized medical care or daily therapy services. Care is provided by trained registered nurses in a medical setting under a doctor’s supervision and can be similar to the same level of care you’d see within a hospital setting. Though many skilled nursing facilities are limited to short-term stays following hospitalizations, surgery, injury or other notable declines in health, The Legacy Living and Rehabilitation Center offers long term care in addition to short-term rehabilitation (Witt & Hoyt, 2022).

An assisted living community however, provides care to older adults who are unable to safely live alone. Residents reside in apartment style communities that can be private or semi-private. These older adults don’t necessarily require the same higher level care that a skilled nursing facility specializes in. In assisted living communities, independence is encouraged while assistance is available for daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, medication management and more (Witt & Hoyt, 2022).

Both skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities offer 24/7 care to their residents.

Built with residents and their families in mind, The Legacy Living and Rehabilitation Center is committed to providing dignified care and purposeful living.
