A Vital Resource for Cancer Patients in Campbell County: the Wyoming Cancer Program

  • Posted On:

Cancer affects millions of people each year, and the emotional, financial, and physical toll it takes on individuals and their families can be overwhelming. At Campbell County Health, we recognize the importance of providing support for cancer patients throughout their treatment journey, and that includes making them aware of valuable resources like the Wyoming Cancer Program.

The Wyoming Cancer Program (WCP) is an initiative designed to help Wyoming residents access the care and support they need during and after a cancer diagnosis. If you or someone you love is facing cancer in Wyoming, this program can provide critical assistance, from financial aid to educational resources and beyond. Below are some of the various ways the Wyoming Cancer Program supports cancer patients and their families.

1. Financial Assistance for Cancer Care

One of the most immediate and impactful services provided by the Wyoming Cancer Program is financial assistance. Cancer treatment can be expensive, even with insurance, and many individuals find themselves struggling to cover the costs of medical appointments, prescriptions, travel to specialized treatment centers, and more.

The WCP offers financial aid to eligible residents of Wyoming to help cover the costs associated with cancer treatment. This support can ease the financial burden and ensure that individuals can focus on their recovery rather than worrying about how to pay for care.

2. Access to Cancer Screening and Early Detection

Early detection is key to successfully treating cancer. The Wyoming Cancer Program offers funding for cancer screenings, particularly for those who may be uninsured or underinsured. These screenings can include mammograms, colonoscopies, Pap smears, and more—tests that can detect cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages.

By offering screening services, the WCP is committed to improving health outcomes and catching cancer before it progresses to more advanced stages, increasing the chances of successful treatment.

3. Support and Navigation Services

Navigating a cancer diagnosis and treatment plan can be overwhelming, especially when faced with the medical information and treatment decisions. The Wyoming Cancer Program provides support through professional cancer care navigators, who are available to guide patients through each step of their cancer journey.

These navigators are experts in understanding the resources available and can help with everything from coordinating care to finding transportation assistance, locating support groups, and even helping patients understand insurance options. Their role is to ensure that cancer patients don't have to face these challenges alone.

This is where Campbell County Health’s (CCH) Patient Navigator, Ronda Boller, steps in.

Ronda has spent her career in healthcare and previously served on the CCH Board of Trustees.  When she saw the Patient Navigator position posted, she knew it was the perfect fit. The role, which is grant-funded and one of just a handful of such positions in Wyoming, is essential to the Heptner Cancer Center, where Ronda works every day to make the unthinkable more manageable, easing the burden for cancer patients.

“My job is to eliminate barriers for our patients,” Ronda explains. Whether it's financial concerns, transportation to treatment, or connecting patients with specialists outside of Campbell County, Ronda is there to help.

4. Patient and Family Education

Cancer can be a confusing and isolating diagnosis, but the Wyoming Cancer Program works to alleviate some of that fear and uncertainty through educational resources. The program offers a wealth of information about the various types of cancer, treatment options, side effects, and coping strategies.

This education is not just for the patients themselves but also for their families and caregivers. Being informed helps families better understand what their loved one is going through, how to provide support, and how to manage their own well-being during this difficult time.

5. Transportation Assistance

For many cancer patients, getting to and from treatment centers is one of the greatest logistical challenges. The Wyoming Cancer Program helps with transportation by offering travel assistance to ensure that individuals can attend essential appointments and follow-up visits, even if they are located in rural areas or far from specialized care centers.

Whether it’s help with gas reimbursement or arrangements for rides, the WCP removes one more barrier that might prevent patients from receiving the care they need.

6. Connecting with Local Resources

As part of its statewide effort to support cancer patients, the Wyoming Cancer Program partners with local healthcare organizations, including Campbell County Health. This collaboration ensures that patients in our community have access to the most up-to-date information, resources, and care options available. Our goal at Campbell County Health is to make sure every patient has the tools and resources they need to face their cancer journey with confidence.

7. Free or Low-Cost Support Programs

In addition to direct financial assistance, the Wyoming Cancer Program provides access to other low-cost, or no-cost programs designed to alleviate the burden on patients. This includes services such as:

  • Wigs, prosthetics, and medical supplies for cancer patients undergoing treatment

  • Wellness programs and fitness resources to help patients stay strong during treatment

  • Emotional support services, such as counseling and therapy
