New Orthopedic Surgeon joins WYOS

Dr. Scott Sorenson spent a lot of time with orthopedic surgeons at a young age as he underwent multiple surgeries to correct a complex limb deformity. He looked up to the surgeons who took care of him, and wanted to help others the way they helped him.

“There’s something very rewarding about helping others move from injury or limited mobility to restored function,” said Dr. Sorenson.

Dr. Sorenson will practice both general and pediatric orthopedic surgery at Wyoming Orthopedics and Spine (WYOS), beginning in January 2021.

He completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at Children’s Orthopaedics of Atlanta. Before coming to Gillette he practiced at the prestigious Andrews Institute for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Dallas, Texas, where he most recently served as the interim Chief of Orthopedics. He was previously an assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Penn State College of Medicine.

The opportunity to live in a small town again was one of the things that attracted Dr. Sorenson to Gillette.

“I grew up near the mountains,” said Dr. Sorenson. “I miss the mountains, and all the ways to experience the outdoors. I’ve lived in big cities like Dallas and Atlanta, and in towns of 25,000-30,000 people. I want my five kids to have the opportunity to fully experience life in a smaller town.”

Getting to know his patients and developing relationships over time is very important to Dr. Sorenson. So is listening carefully, and discussing all the options available for treating their problem.

“It’s important to start with conservative approaches first,” said Dr. Sorenson. “Things like physical therapy, bracing and injections should be exhausted before surgery. If surgery is necessary, it should be discussed thoroughly, all questions will be answered and we will come up with a game plan together."

The only fellowship-trained pediatric orthopedic surgeon in Wyoming
